Schooling shows are a wonderful way for you to get your “feet wet” in the competitive world. They provide a venue for riders and horses that need experience in the show ring. The atmosphere is designed to be a bit less stressful than a recognized show, yet comparative enough to give you a good feel of how you will fair out there.

In order for the show to be sanctioned by the WPDA, certain criteria must be met. In 2006 the WPDA Board members reviewed and updated the requirements in hopes of improving the quality of shows available in this area.  Shows that are sanctioned by the WPDA must follow USEF rules.

The WPDA has always required that judges employed for a WPDA sanctioned show have shown successfully to at least second level. Beginning the 2006 competition year, judges will be required to show proof of their competency up to second level. The USDF makes it easy to provide this information. A performance certificate can be obtained up to second level and there is no charge to members who are requesting the document. The USDF archives scores back to the 1970’s and for that information there may be a small fee. To obtain a rider performance certificate you need to submit four scores of 60% or better. Of course, judges with medals (bronze, silver, gold) may also submit that certificate for proof of their competency.

The Sanction Show committee would like to develop a list of qualified judges that can be available to facilities interested in hosting a WPDA Sanctioned schooling show. If you are interested in being available to judge next season and would like to be on this list, please send a copy of your performance certificate to the Sanction Show Chair person. If you have any questions you may also contact us.

Improving our programs is an ongoing process. We always appreciate the input of the membership. Schooling shows are a place to learn and that includes for the management. We would like to see more shows in our area and we need to support everyone involved as they learn what is required to provide a good atmosphere for competition. Support for each other in the dressage community is key for all of us to be successful. Above all, we should be having fun! Good luck and happy riding!
